Carp Fishing

Hook, line & sinker...

Hold onto your fishing hats because we’re reeling in the fun! We’re thrilled to announce that we are now offering carp fishing at our serene location.

With over 150 various-sized carp recently spotted in our virgin, un-fished waters, our site is a haven for anglers. Our well-balanced ecosystem boasts an abundance of naturally grown fish, and there have been sightings of a monster lurking beneath.

Rumours suggest there may be a 40lb – 50lb behemoth—now, that’s one fish tale you won’t want to miss!

For now, we’re opening our waters to a small, select group of experienced anglers as we aim to build a comprehensive catalogue of what our site has to offer. The largest catch to date stands at an impressive 27lb, but who knows what you’ll discover lurking beneath the surface?

Fishing is currently free for our lodge guests, provided they are experienced, have all the correct gear, and prioritize the welfare of our fish. So, bring your A-game.

Exclusive Syndicate

Fly Fishing

Hook, line, and sinker.

There’s a natural water in-flow to Lake Cleveleymere, which means that it’s full of fresh critters that help our fish thrive. Trout have been living in the lake since 1967 and we sell fishing equipment in our on-site shop.

Just a short walk away from our lake, you can go carp fishing in a nearby fishery. The fishery is open all year round and you don’t need to be a member to fish there. Much like at Cleveleymere Lake, you can pay on the day, but we recommend that you book in advance to avoid disappointment. We are hoping to diversify our fish species soon so stay tuned to our socials and subscribe to our mailing list for future updates.

  The Experience

Fishing at Cleveleymere Lake

Carp fishing at Cleveleymere presents a unique challenge. Once a trout fishery for fly fishing enthusiasts, the lake has gradually shifted its focus to the resident carp that have thrived here for decades without significant angling pressure.

These exceptional carp were never intentionally stocked; rumours suggest they are escapees from neighbouring lakes during rare flooding events.

The mere is natural and unfenced, which is intentional. While many beautiful specimens have been caught, the actual number and size of the fish remain largely unknown. One encouraging sign is the healthy population of 4-10 lb carp, clearly born in the lake from earlier resident fish. The largest fish that has been caught so far remains at 28lb but sightings of much larger fishing have been spotted with the naked eye and from our drone.

For some anglers, this presents paradise, with the allure of an unknown trophy drawing them back. However, those specifically seeking large, named fish may find this lake less suitable for now.

Cleveleymere is a challenging venue best suited for experienced anglers. For those seeking a test, the lake offers numerous obstacles. It serves primarily as a holiday destination, with luxury lodges lining its banks. The primary purpose is to provide a peaceful and relaxing experience for paying guests, who have access to boats and can engage in water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding. This can complicate fishing efforts, as much of the lake is off-limits to anglers.

Long-range casting is essential in many areas to reach feeding spots, with the lake featuring varying depths, including shallow plateaus. The lakebed consists of silt, gravel, and clay, and it becomes heavily weedy during the summer months.

All current members are required to participate in regular work parties to aid in the lake’s ongoing development for angling. This is a mandatory aspect of membership, and the project is still in progress, resulting in the delay of fully opening the syndicate this year.

The syndicate aims to maintain a friendly environment among members, who must respect that the primary use of the venue is for lodge guests. Courteous, polite, and respectful behaviour is essential to protect this serene location.

Cleveleymere is a tranquil, beautiful haven for wildlife, offering a unique opportunity for the right, experienced angler to enjoy a type of fishing that is increasingly rare in today’s ticketed venues.

Please note – Our lake is a naturally-fed, organically-balanced body of water. Our fish have been able to survive and thrive for years without being fished for. Solely dependant on the natural food which the lake sustains. The lake presents various challenges such as; weedy areas, very shallow areas & wildlife. We are not a runs water. Please consider booking elsewhere should you prefer an easier fishing experience. But for those angles who relish in the challenge and mystery of the unknown, you might just hook the most rewarding catch you’ve had so far.
