7 Adventure Activities in the Lake District

In the North West, we’re so lucky to have many beautiful and exciting places just on our doorsteps.

At Cleveleymere, you’re just down the road from Preston, Lancaster, Manchester, and Liverpool. But one of the most gorgeous places on the planet is just a short trip away, too. Of course, we’re talking about The Lake District.

The Lake District National Park is a region in Cumbria with striking lakes, quaint market towns, fells and mountains, and loads to see and do. The Lake District is actually really popular for adventure activities, as well.

In today’s blog, we’re going to be looking at 7 of the adventure activities in the Lake District that you can do with Cleveleymere Lakeside Lodges as the perfect base.

Via Ferrata, Honister Slate Mine, Keswick

The award-winning Classic Via Ferrata at Honister Slate Mine goes over the original miner’s track on the outer incline of Fleetwith Pike. It’s a safe way to climb the mountain and you’ll have breathtaking views.

The minimum age for this activity is 10 and the minimum height is 130 cm. No prior experience is required. From start to finish, it can take 1.5 – 3 hours, depending on your ability.

There’s also a more challenging version of the Classic Via Ferrata at Honister Slate Mine, the Via Ferrata Xtreme.

Ghyll Scrambling: Stonycroft, The Esk Gorge, The Secret Ghyll

Ghyll scrambling (a.k.a. canyoning) is where you one way or another make your way up/down a river or gorge. It’s awesome – a truly unforgettable experience.

This is an all-weather activity and can involve using natural rock pool slides, ropes, scrambling, abseiling, jumping into plunge pools, and swimming. This adventure activity is so much fun and is great for groups.

Kayaking, River Deep Mountain High, Coniston Water

Whether you’re an absolute beginner or have been kayaking for years, this is a phenomenal activity in the Lake District. There are many kayaking locations in the Lakes, one of which is Coniston Water.

You can have a kayaking session with River Deep Mountain High on Coniston Water. You get your bearings and learn how to paddle in a sheltered bay at first, and then go on to kayak on the lake.

Psst! You can get your practice on Lake Cleveleymere – our kayaks are completely free to use.

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is a hugely popular adventure activity in the Lakes because it has the perfect landscape.

You can go your own way and hire a mountain bike from a company such as Lake District Bike Hire or bring your own bike with you and go along one of the much-loved trails

Bikes are also available to hire direct at Cleveleymere for a small fee of £5 per bike per day. Pre-booking is advised due to limited availability, please enquire.

Rock Climbing, Lake District Climbing, Diamond Crag

Lake District Climbing offers introductory rock climbing sessions at Diamond Crag, which is in Eskdale.

You can have groups of up to 6 people and you’ll be able to build up your confidence in a safe and fun environment. You’ll learn some climbing techniques and even have the opportunity to abseil down a cliff face!

Are you a more experienced climber? Lake District Climbing also offers multi-pitch climbing sessions in Langdale, as well as advanced climbing sessions.

Infinity Bridge, Honister Slate Mine, Keswick

Infinity Bridge at Honister Slate Mine is a high-wire bridge (the longest in Europe) that takes you across a gorge at 1,000 ft above sea level, giving you wonderful views of Honsiter Pass. All the safety equipment will be provided and, as we don’t all like heights, spectators are allowed to watch.

Abseiling, Adventure Vertical, Ullswater Valley

Feeling fearless? Adventure Vertical offers abseiling experiences in Ullswater Valley.

This adventure activity takes half a day and all equipment is included. Abseiling in the Lake District will give you outstanding views, plus a huge thrill.

We highly recommend trying out abseiling with Vertical Adventure, especially if you love an adrenaline rush.

These are just a few of the adventure activity highlights of the Lake District. There are endless things to see and do when you go there. And if adventure activities aren’t for you, there will still be plenty of activities for you to enjoy with your feet firmly on the ground!
